Allspice (Pimenta dioica)  Uplifting, spicy fragrance is beneficial for depression, nervous tension and exhaustion.  Small amounts in a massage blend can help ease muscle spasms, as well as the pain and stiffness of arthritis.  Use in a diffuser for sinus relief.

Amyris (Amyris balsamifera)  Similar in fragrance to Sandalwood but not botanically related.  Extensively used in soap, perfume and blends as a fixative and substitute fragrance.  Calming, reduces stress and tension, relieves anxiety, improves mental clarity.

Benzoin, absolute (Styrax benzoin)  Thick, pungent resin.  Uplifting vanilla aroma.  Aides cracked, rough skin when mixed with a cream or carrier oil.  As an inhalative it reduces tension, stress and depression.  Beneficial for frostbite, burns, psoriasis, eczema and acne. 

Caution:  Could possibly irritate or sensitize delicate skin.

Solvent extracted from plant exudates.

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)  Calming and uplifting with a delicate citrus aroma.  Great in diffuser, bath or massage for anxiety, depression and nervous tension.  Mix two drops each of Bergamot, Lavender, Marjoram and Lemon and diffuse or inhale.  The results are quick.  Safe for adults and children.  Also helps reduce patient fears when diffused in medial and dental offices.  Opens communication by breaking down interpersonal barriers.

Birch, Sweet (Betula lenta)  Analgesic.  Strong wintergreen aroma. Use in carrier oil as a rub for tendinitis and muscular pains.  Can be toxic in high concentrations.  Always dilute.

Camphor, White (Cinnamonum camphora)  Camphor stimulates respiration, helps clear chest congestion.  Mood uplifting.  Strong adrenal stimulant best used sparingly in blends with other oils. 

Caution:  Avoid Camphor oils labeled "Yellow" or "Brown", as they are considered toxic and carcinogenic.  All Camphor oils are incompatible with homeopathic treatments and cancel their effect, avoid during pregnancy, especially first 3 months.

Cypress Cupressus semperviens)  Astringent.  Bracing.  Acts as a vasoconstrictor and can be a useful additive to a massage oil or cream (along with Lemon Oil and Wheatgerm Oil) that is gently stroked upwards over varicose veins.  Reported to help regulate menstrual cycles by increasing estrogen secretions.

Dill Seed (Anethum graveolens)  Calming and relaxing, promotes milk flow in nursing mothers.  Eases indigestion and helps curb nausea when inhaled.

Elemi (Canarium luzonicum)  Often called the "poor man's Frankincense" Elemi, with its faint lemon scent, is used for rejuvenating wrinkled skin.  Use as a cool compress to reduce facial stress lines.  Mix with Jojoba or cream to help skin look youthful.  Mixed equally with Spearmint and diffused, it helps clear stale air from the room, relieves dry coughs and congestion.

Eucalyptus Globulus  Most common and least expensive variety of Eucalyptus.  has the aroma that most people associate with this oil.. Clean, sharp scent helps open nasal passages and clear sinus congestion.  Great in massage blends for sore, stiff muscles.  Anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal.

Eucalyptus Globulus, Blue Gum Virgin Dark orange color, strong and earthy fragrance.  This is a eucalyptus oil with none of the traditional processing that occurs before coming to market.  Prized for its completely natural properties.

Eucalyptus Polybractea  Also known as Blue Mallee Eucalyptus.  Exceptionally bright smelling.  Fights ear, nose and throat infections, both bacterial and viral.  Reported to lessen blood congestion in the prostate.  Helpful in a massage blend for inflammation and many kinds of arthritis.

Eucalyptus Radiata Also known as narrow-leaved Peppermint Eucalyptus.  Preferred for its classic scent and gentle nature on the skin.  Promotes would healing, antiseptic, anti-viral.  Excellent in diffusers or as an inhalative.  Invigorating and decongestant properties.   Also good in the bath.

Fennel, Sweet (Foeniculum vulgare var. dulcis)  Used in diffusers for chest congestion.  Improves circulation and lymphatic drainage, helps with cellulite reduction when added to massage oil or lotion.  Diuretic action promotes weight loss.  For a weight-loss bath blend 4 drops Fennel with 3 drops each Cypress and Grapefruit and soak for 20 minutes..

Fir Needle Balsam (Abies balsamea)  Refreshing diffuser scent.  Relieves depression, stress-related conditions and nervous tension. reported to be of value to asthma sufferers.  Crisp, woodsy scent is reminiscent of winter holidays.

Frankincense CO2 (Boswellia carterii)  Strong antiseptic properties.  When used in a diffuser Frankincense reduces anxiety and tension by slowing and deepening breathing.  As a compress or mixed into a facial oil, it has long been reputed to smooth wrinkles, rejuvenate tired skin and accelerate the healing of skin blemishes.  Try mixing 4 drops of Frankincense, 3 drops of Rose Otto and 3 drops of Neroli into 2 tsp. of Sweet Almond Oil and 1 Tbs. of Jojoba for a rejuvenating face oil.

Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)  Properties and fragrance similar to, but not as intense as, the more expensive CO2 variety.

Frankincense Noir (Boswellia neglecta)  One of the many varieties of Frankincense little known outside their native lands, this lovely oil has the characteristic aroma but with a sharper overtone. Properties similar to the more expensive variety.  Used for generations in Kenya by indigenous people to treat wounds and abrasions.

Geranium Rose , Egypt (Pelargonium graveolens)  Same botanical species as the Geranium oil from China but with sweeter fragrance.  Antidepressant.  Soothing in small amounts and stimulating in larger quantities. Quells anxiety and nervous tension particularly when mixed with Lavender, Bergamot, Sandalwood or Neroli and used in a diffuser or bath.  Said to help balance secretion of hormones.  Useful in treating menopausal hot flashes and PMS.  To ease discomfort of hot flashes mix 10 drops each of Clary Sage and Geranium Rose with 5 drops of Lavender into a 4 ounce bottle of Geranium rose hydrosol.  Use as a mist over face, neck and body.

Geranium Rose, China (Pelargonium graveolens)  Mild skin tonic, astringent, helpful for all skin types.  Balances production of natural skin oils (sebum) and aids in reduction of cellulite when added to a massage blend.  Reported to help ease discomfort of varicose veins when massaged in upward strokes twice a day over the affected area.  Try a mixture of 10 drops Lavender, 5 drops each of Geranium, Rosemary Verbenone and Frankincense blended into 1 ounce of Jojoba or unscented cream base.

Ginger, Cochin (Zingiber officinalis)  Authentic, pure-grade oil from the famed production fields of South India.  A beautiful, round fragrance that is softer and less intense that the CO2 variety.  Helpful for motion sickness and morning sickness if you place one drop each of Ginger, Lavender, and Peppermint on a tissue and inhale deeply.  To bring warmth and comfort to swollen joints and sprains, mix 10 drops each of Ginger, Roman Chamomile and Nutmeg into 2 Tbs. of Jojoba and gently massage over the sore area

Juniper Berry (Juniperus communis)  In the bath, it clears mind, eases sore muscles.  Diffuse with Peppermint and lemon to improve alertness and productivity.  Strong diuretic action makes it useful for treating cellulite, gout and obesity but avoid this oil if you have kidney problems.  powerful detoxifier in the bath.  Mix 5 drops each Juniper, Geranium (any kind), and Cypress into 1 Tbs. of milk, add to tub or warm water and soak for 20 minutes.

Lemon, Yellow SWEET (Citrus Limonum)  Identical in all Therapeutic ways to the oil listed below, the fragrance of this delightful Caribbean oil is intense, sweet and flowery.  Reminds you of a lemonade stand on a warm summer's day.

Lemon, Yellow DRY (Citrus limonum)  A refreshing and elevating bath additive.  Mix with Jojoba to cleanse oily skin...with lavender as a hot compress for acne.  A marvelous, refreshing oil for the diffuser, Lemon has been shown to increase alertness and reduce errors in the workplace.  Strongly antiseptic, lemon is considered to be a "purifying" oil when used in a diffuser.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus)  Antiseptic.  Relieves muscle cramps, tones muscles and makes them more supple when used in a massage oil.  Diffusion can help with sore throat.  Beneficial in treating headaches.  Pleasant, uplifting aroma.

Lime Essence Citrus medica var. acida)  Steam distilled Lime has a sharper-sweet fragrance similar to lime beverages.  Refreshing and uplifting aroma reduces anxiety, metal fatigue, depression.  Excellent in facial lotions for its astringent, toning and restorative qualities.

Litsea Cubeba  Antiseptic and deodorizing with strong yet pleasant lemon scent.  Said to reduce stress and promote sleep when used in a diffuser.  Uplifting.  Bronchodilator.  Improves mental clarity.  Effective in treating oily skin and acne.

Mandarine, Red (Citrus reticulata)  Wonderfully fragrant citrus oil often mistaken for tangerine.  Calms emotions and rambunctious kids.  Excellent diffuser oil in the car, home or classroom.  Anti-spasmodic for cardiovascular and digestive systems.  Said to aid in secretion of bile and breakdown of fats.

Marjoram, Sweet Origanum marjorana hortensis)  This is a true Marjoram oil, not a misnamed Thyme oil.  As an inhalative is is more effective for insomnia sufferers than Lavender.  Eases feelings for loneliness and rejection.  Mixed in a massage blend it is reported to ease muscle tension and reduce inflammation and spasms.  Also works as an anaphrodisiac which means it reduces sexual desire.

Niaouli (Melaleuca quinuenervia)  A non-irritating and powerful antiseptic with properties similar to Tea Tree.  Good in a diffuser for all types of respiratory tract infections.  Often used as a skin treatment prior to radiation therapy to help prevent burns.  Promotes wound healing...add 5-6 drops to 1/2 pint of boiled water to treat cuts and scrapes.

Orange, Bitter (Citrus anrantium var. amara)  An extraordinarily uplifting and evocative fragrance.  Bitter Orange is not at all bitter, it's romantic and emotional.  The aroma is fuller than Neroli (orange blossoms) dryer than Sweet Orange (fresh-peeled fruit) with just a hint of mystery.

Orange, Blood (Citrus sinensis)  Happy, upbeat oil that quells anxiety and eases insomnia with a mildly sedative effect.  Stimulates the digestive track, enhances peristalsis and promotes bowel evacuation when you mix 7 drops of Blood Orange with 3 drops each Ylang Ylang and Lavender in 1 ounce Jojoba and apply in a circular motion to the abdomen.

 Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii)  Very good as a stress reliever when used in the bath or mixed with Lavender or Marjoram.  When used in a facial oil, it stimulates sebum production and helps balance the skin.  Said to stimulate cell regeneration.

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)  Earthy, sweet, penetrating fragrance that gets better with age.  Excellent for skin care.  Treats cracked, weeping sores, skin allergies, dry or itchy patches, toenail fungus, scars and inflammations.  Quiets anxiety and eases feelings of neglect and ennui.  Mitigates fears about sex when you blend equal amounts of Patchouli and Sweet Orange for inhalation or diffusion.

Ylang Ylang  (Cananga odorata var. genuina)  This is arguably the most erotic scent on earth.  Valued as an aphrodisiac and perfume.  Superior anti-depressant, calmative and anxiety reducer.  Used primarily as an inhalative.  It is said to help lower high blood pressure and reduce tachycardia.  When blended into a skin lotion, it will  help restore balance to either oily or dry skin.
